The Role of Software in Construction: Project Management Edition

Date:

Construction is a hands-on industry; it is incredibly labor-intensive and physical, so you would be forgiven for wondering where exactly software comes into it. Software, and technology as a whole, has helped to revolutionize the industry, from producing building schematics to tech designed to make the building process easier. One area that has perhaps benefited the most is project management. Let’s get into it.

Financial Management

Solid project management software should have elements of financial management within it. This will enable you to estimate costs both for materials and labor. These figures can then be used in financial forecasts. It can also help you to create invoices and support you in setting the budget for the project and helping to make sure that the project adheres to this.

Documentation Management

A lot of project management software allows you to manage the relevant documentation needed to complete a construction project. This could be permits and best practices or documentation on the workers or creating reports. Having all of this in one place is extremely advantageous in making managing the project as easy and straightforward as possible.

Material & Machinery Management

Obviously, machinery and materials are needed to complete any construction project. A lot of construction management software allows you to keep track of the materials, stock and machinery. This helps to mitigate losses, scheduling conflicts and misuse. In terms of equipment, you should also be able to see when certain things will need safety inspections and signing off for use.

Schedule Management

As a construction manager, you are likely to have a number of workers with different specialisms or focuses, as well as general construction workers. In order to maximize their efficacy, you will need to schedule their shifts correctly. You can assign hours, materials and machinery to the correct parties enabling immediate mobilization of tasks.

Field Site Remote Management

In order to see whether or not your workers are working to the schedule that you have set out, you need to manage the site and record logs of the tasks as and when they are carried out. This goes hand-in-hand with the scheduling aspects. The logs can be kept by the workers themselves and integrated into a central hub. The logs can then be accessed by all relevant parties and used accordingly.

Integration

Ideally, the project management software that you have should integrate with the other services and systems that your construction business uses. This makes things easier when it comes to sharing information across different platforms. However, this will likely depend on the software itself, so be sure to read up before you commit; if you want to learn more about project management software, then Kahua is a great provider to start with, so bear that in mind.

In Conclusion

Software and technology as a whole has been instrumental in the revitalization of a number of industries, and it has been truly transformative for a whole host of businesses too. While it does, of course, constitute an extra cost, it does offer a great return on investment which is why it is worth considering for your construction business.
