You can sometimes fit different tyre models to an electric car, provided the combination meets the vehicle manufacturer’s requirements. However, matching tyres on each axle is the recommended starting point, and some cars require closer matching across all four wheels. With electric vehicle tires (this is commonly referred to as ยางรถไฟฟ้า in Thai), an identical size marking is only part of the picture. Before accepting a substitute, have a tyre specialist check its specification against the tyres staying on your car.
The workshop has been called. Your damaged tyre cannot be repaired, the original model is unavailable, and there is an alternative ready to fit. You need the car tomorrow. Suddenly, a five-minute choice has become a decision about pairs, tread depths and compatibility.
The Shelf Is Full, but the Answer Is Specific
A replacement may look identical to the tyre beside it. Both have grooves, and both fit the wheel. That resemblance can hide differences in construction, compounds and grip characteristics.
The useful question is how the proposed tyre will work with the remaining set. The two tyres on an axle should be considered together, with matching make, model and specification helping to support consistent responses.
This does not mean every damaged tyre triggers a purchase of four. It means the workshop needs to examine what is already fitted before recommending what comes next.
A driver with three relatively fresh tyres may face a different decision from someone whose remaining tread is substantially worn. Even ordering the exact same model does not make that difference disappear.
Put These Details on the Counter
Before authorising the work, give the fitter enough information to make a vehicle-specific recommendation:
- Your car’s exact model and version, including whether it has all-wheel drive.
- The make, model, size and ratings of the existing tyres.
- Measured tread depths, rather than an estimate that they “look fine”.
- Any manufacturer instructions covering replacement combinations or wear differences.
- Whether the car has different approved tyre sizes front and rear.
The EV badge cannot answer those questions. Nor can a general recommendation be borrowed from another electric car.
A Pair Can Change the Plan
If a single replacement would create an unsuitable mismatch, replacing two tyres may be the appropriate solution. Their position should follow the vehicle’s requirements and professional fitting advice.
Some all-wheel-drive systems have specific limits on differences between tyres. Check those limits rather than applying a universal rule about replacing one, two or four.
Keep seasonal categories consistent, too. Introducing a winter tyre into a summer set is a separate compatibility issue, even if its dimensions match. Discuss the complete arrangement whenever changing categories.
Leave with a Clear Explanation
Ask the fitter to describe why the recommended combination is suitable. You should understand whether the decision rests on matching a pair, remaining tread depth or an instruction from the car manufacturer.
There may be a wait for the correct product. There may be a sound reason to replace more than the damaged tyre. Knowing that reason makes the decision easier to accept.
Contact Landsail to discuss its EV tyre range and find an affiliated dealer. Bring your vehicle details and existing tyre specifications so the replacement plan starts with your car’s needs rather than whichever tyre happens to be available.
