Dr. Lisa Dunne: Revolutionizing Education with Faith, Mentorship, and Innovation

In the sunlit hills of Chula Vista, California, a quiet revolution is underway. It’s not the kind that grabs headlines with flashy tech startups or billion-dollar valuations. Instead, it’s a movement rooted in timeless values—faith, mentorship, and a commitment to transformative education. At the helm of this movement is Dr. Lisa Dunne, a visionary leader reshaping the landscape of American education.

As the President and CEO of Chula Vista Christian University (CVCU), Dr. Dunne is challenging the status quo of higher education. With a background as a college professor and a mother who homeschooled her children, she has witnessed firsthand the disparities between traditional educational systems and the personalized, relationship-driven approach of homeschooling. This experience ignited her passion to create an alternative—a university that blends academic rigor with the nurturing guidance of mentorship and faith-based principles.

The Genesis of a Vision

Dr. Dunne’s journey into education was not born out of a desire for prestige or recognition but from a deep-seated belief in the power of transformative learning. “I was inspired to pursue this path after spending 20 years as a college professor,” she shares. “I saw the brokenness of America’s education system and how it contrasted so significantly with the organic model of homeschooling.”

Her dual experience—as an educator in the classroom and a parent guiding her own children’s education—provided a unique perspective. “As a young adult, I stood at the precipice of two very different worlds: I homeschooled my own children from kindergarten to college, and I taught other people’s children in college,” Dr. Dunne reflects. “When we look at the experiential and statistical data comparing the two types of educational programs, we see that homeschoolers are dramatically outperforming their public school counterparts.”

This realization led to the birth of CVCU in 2020, a university designed to honor academic rigor within the context of relationship, discourse, and practicum-based learning. The institution’s mission is clear: “Through intentional mentorship, rigorous reading, and career-driven internships, we will equip scholars and visionaries who will advance the Kingdom, strengthen the community, and lead with excellence in the home, the church, and the marketplace.”

A Distinctive Educational Model

CVCU’s approach stands in stark contrast to traditional educational institutions. Eschewing the “sage on the stage” lecture model, the university embraces a “guide on the side” philosophy. Students engage in discussion-based, Socratic-style learning, fostering critical thinking and active participation. This model is deeply rooted in the tutoring modality popularized by Oxford University and the coaching methodology of the homeschool movement.

“Our students discover, learn, and practice their craft through discussion and reflection with mentors who care about the whole student—mind, body, and spirit,” Dr. Dunne explains. “Instead of being subjected to dry, esoteric, non-relational, lecture-based models of education, they are engaged in dynamic, living, active classes.”

This emphasis on mentorship extends beyond the classroom. CVCU integrates mandatory internships into its curriculum, ensuring that students gain real-world experience and a competitive edge in the marketplace. “Education is transformative,” Dr. Dunne asserts. “When I think of significant contributions and defining success, I think of our students. Many of them would provide stories of transformation: moving from insecurity to courage, coming in doubting themselves and leaving with a sense of hope and agency about their future.”

Breaking Down Barriers

One of the most compelling aspects of CVCU’s model is its commitment to affordability. In a landscape where private education often comes with a hefty price tag, CVCU offers a debt-free college education system. “We have created a system that allows students to graduate without debt and allows young families to participate in private, faith-based educational systems that are priced at less than $200 a month,” Dr. Dunne notes. “In many regions, including Southern California where we live, faith-based schools often charge upwards of $20,000 a year. We are on a mission to make private education affordable for all students.”

This commitment to affordability is not just about lowering costs but about empowering families to take control of their educational choices without relying on state funding or adopting a welfare mentality. “It’s a matter of what time and energy we’re willing to devote to the process,” Dr. Dunne emphasizes.

"Hope is the thing with feathers that perches on the soul."

A Legacy of Transformation

Dr. Dunne’s impact extends beyond the walls of CVCU. Over the past two decades, she has founded more than 30 homeschool academies across the United States, partnering with local churches to provide educational alternatives that align with Christian values. “We have partnered with parents and the local church to establish these institutions,” she says. “Our goal now is to have one in every county across the United States, 3,144 in total over the next decade.”

This vision is encapsulated in the Academic Rescue Mission (ARM), which encompasses educational demographics from preschool through college. ARM focuses on mentor-driven, locally governed, parent-directed education systems that provide individualized, Socratic education for the next generation.

Embracing the Future

Looking ahead, Dr. Dunne is not resting on her laurels. The upcoming launch of Veritas Christian Community College in 2025 marks a significant expansion of CVCU’s mission. This community college is dedicated to 8th to 12th-grade homeschooling students, allowing them to gain dual enrollment credit while in high school and graduate with most or all of their college degree completed.

“Looking toward 2025 in education, we see a crossroads for private educational institutions,” Dr. Dunne observes. “In 2024, one private college a month was closing, often because of bad choices in faculty hiring or extraordinarily overpriced academic programs. In 2025, that number jumped to one closure per week. That could sound disheartening, but in reality, 2025 is a year of hope and promise for entrepreneurs and education.”

She continues, “The ecosystem is ripe with opportunities, especially for those who are willing to think through the lens of the youngest generation. They are debt-averse. They are depressed and anxious. They need mentors and role models to speak into their lives. A screen does not have that same capacity for apprenticeship, membership, discipleship. They need our time and attention in order to become the best version of themselves.”

A Personal Commitment

Beyond her professional achievements, Dr. Dunne’s personal life reflects the values she espouses. Married for 35 years, she and her husband Adrian have raised two intelligent and compassionate children, both of whom were homeschooled. “Although these are great accolades, I count my greatest successes as being married 35 years and having raised two amazing children who are now intelligent, compassionate adults,” she shares.

Her dedication to personal growth and leadership development is reflected in her curated selection of books, podcasts, and resources. Dr. Dunne emphasizes the importance of continuous learning, stating, “There are a number of books, podcasts, and resources that I would recommend to aspiring leaders.” However, she underscores that knowledge alone isn’t sufficient. “Books aren’t enough. We need to be surrounded by leaders and mentors who will call us up to greatness.”

The Heart of a Leader

At the core of Dr. Dunne’s leadership philosophy is the concept of hope. ““Hope is the thing with feathers that perches on the soul.” It’s a fitting metaphor for her mission—lifting students from anxiety to agency, from debt to freedom, from disengagement to discovery.

The success of Chula Vista Christian University and Veritas Christian Community College serves as a beacon for what is possible when education is reimagined. It is a testament to the power of visionary leadership and the transformative impact of a faith-based, mentorship-driven educational model.

In the words of Dr. Dunne, “Through the right education system, we can discover our design and find meaning in life.” As her work continues to inspire and transform, it is clear that the future of education is in capable hands.
