Sunitha Vikram: Building Inclusive Futures Through AGUA DEI Consulting Services

AGUA DEI Consulting Services

In the evolving landscape of corporate consulting, where the demand for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) is reaching unprecedented heights, Sunitha Vikram stands as a transformative force. As the Managing Director of AGUA DEI Consulting Services, a consulting firm dedicated to fostering inclusive and empowering organizational cultures, Sunitha has carved a niche for herself by developing innovative strategies that guide businesses into the future of work. Her journey, punctuated by leadership roles across sectors, highlights not just a career built on professional acumen but also a personal mission to make workplaces more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable.

“The future of work isn’t just about technology or automation; it’s about people. Organizations that prioritize inclusivity and equity will be the ones that attract and retain top talent, innovate faster, and outperform their peers.”

With over two decades of experience, Sunitha’s journey is not just one of career progression but of personal evolution—a story that spans across industries, continents, and perspectives. From leading global operations in pharmaceutical research to spearheading leadership development for tens of thousands of employees at a multinational bank, Sunitha’s career trajectory has been marked by an unyielding focus on leadership and cultural transformation. Yet, it wasn’t until she ventured into the world of DEI that she found her true calling.

“It was during my time as the Head of Leadership Development at a multinational bank, overseeing 30,000 employees across three regions, that I truly saw how DEI could shift the dynamics of an organization,” says Sunitha, reflecting on the turning point in her career. “I realized that inclusive practices weren’t just a ‘nice-to-have’; they were essential for organizational success. The moment I understood that, I knew I had to dive deeper into this field.”

Crafting a Roadmap for Organizational Transformation

In 2020, Sunitha established AGUA DEI Consulting Services, which currently has offices in Chennai and Bangalore. At AGUA DEI Consulting Services, Sunitha’s team specializes in the highly intricate art of developing and implementing DEI strategies that create lasting cultural shifts. The firm’s value proposition is clear: they help organizations prepare for the future of work by building inclusive cultures that are resilient, adaptable, and future-ready. However, AGUA’s edge lies in its uniquely designed 8-step framework—a comprehensive guide that enables organizations to take practical, measurable steps toward creating a truly inclusive environment.

“We’ve learned that organizations often don’t know where to start when it comes to DEI,” Sunitha shares. “It’s overwhelming. That’s why we created the 8-step framework, which not only provides clear guidance on how to begin but also ensures that businesses can track and measure progress effectively.”

This framework has become AGUA’s distinctive competitive advantage, allowing the firm to stand out in a crowded marketplace. By breaking down complex DEI concepts into actionable steps, Sunitha and her team have empowered organizations to make meaningful changes that go beyond surface-level diversity initiatives. “We’ve always emphasized that real transformation isn’t about ticking boxes; it’s about creating cultures where inclusion, empowerment, and trust are at the core of every decision.”

The framework, which begins with understanding an organization’s current state and culture, culminates in strategies designed to embed DEI into the very fabric of the business. This personalized, adaptive approach to consulting sets AGUA apart. Sunitha believes that no two organizations are alike, and thus, their DEI solutions shouldn’t be either.

Overcoming Challenges and Reinventing Leadership

The path to leadership for women, particularly in consulting, is not without its hurdles. Sunitha, who has spent her career navigating the intersection of professional aspirations and family life, recognizes the unique challenges women face in balancing the demands of high-powered careers with personal responsibilities. The journey to leadership, she notes, is often a delicate balancing act that requires continuous reinvention. “There’s a stereotype that women can’t have it all, that you can’t balance a successful career with family life,” Sunitha says. “But I don’t buy into that. It requires adaptability, resilience, and a willingness to constantly upskill. For me, staying relevant professionally meant embracing change and evolving—something I’ve always done.”

Her path has been paved with self-determination and a proactive approach to growth. She recognizes the importance of upskilling, networking, and challenging traditional gender stereotypes. Through this process, Sunitha has been able to cultivate a leadership style that is grounded in authenticity and a belief in the power of inclusive cultures. “It’s not just about the work; it’s about the people. We want to create spaces where women, especially, can thrive without sacrificing their personal lives. And that starts with organizations offering flexible policies and equitable opportunities,” she asserts. This commitment to inclusivity is evident in the firm’s approach to the future of consulting, which Sunitha envisions as an ever-evolving field. “In the next 5-10 years, we aim to be recognized as disruptors in the DEI space, challenging the existing norms and pushing organizations to think differently about what it means to be truly inclusive.”

"The future of work isn’t just about technology or automation; it’s about people. Organizations that prioritize inclusivity and equity will be the ones that attract and retain top talent, innovate faster, and outperform their peers."

Creating Meaningful Transformation

For Sunitha, consulting is more than just business—it’s about creating a legacy that transcends the immediate outcomes of projects. AGUA’s work, particularly its Women’s Leadership Program in Dubai, exemplifies this broader mission. This six-month program, designed to develop young women leaders, showed immediate results, with significant improvements in retention, career advancement, and recognition for its participants. The success of this program is a testament to Sunitha’s belief that empowering women isn’t just a moral obligation; it’s a business imperative. “We saw firsthand the power of leadership development in action. The women who went through the program came out with enhanced confidence, skills, and visibility in their organizations,” she shares with pride. “This is what drives me. Seeing the transformation in individuals and organizations—knowing that we played a role in it—is incredibly rewarding.”

Yet, as she looks to the future, Sunitha is determined not only to scale AGUA’s influence but also to reshape the broader landscape of consulting to make it more inclusive for future generations of women. One key area she advocates for is vendor diversity—ensuring that organizations not only look inward at their own DEI practices but also extend those principles to their external partnerships and supply chains.

“True inclusion doesn’t stop at your organization’s walls. It needs to be reflected in every aspect of your business, including the vendors you partner with,” she argues. “When companies focus on diversity across their entire ecosystem, that’s when the real change happens.”

A Future Built on Inclusion

In the years to come, Sunitha envisions AGUA as the gold standard for inclusive organizational cultures. Her firm’s 8-step framework, she believes, will become a widely recognized and adopted model for businesses striving for lasting DEI impact. As Sunitha continues her work, she remains focused on her ultimate mission: to create organizations that are not just profitable but also equitable, sustainable, and forward-thinking.

“What we do is not just about business strategy,” Sunitha concludes. “It’s about shaping the future of work, creating cultures where everyone—regardless of gender, race, or background—can thrive. That’s the legacy I hope to leave.”
