Inspiring Women in Consulting, 2025

Lori Sherer: Bridging Strategy and Technology in the Age of AI

In the fast-paced world of management consulting, where data-driven decisions and technological innovation reign supreme, Lori Sherer stands out as a trailblazer. As an Advisory Partner at Bain & Company, Sherer has spent over three decades at the intersection of business strategy and technology, helping organizations navigate transformative change. But what truly sets her apart is her ability to anticipate the future—whether it’s harnessing the power of artificial intelligence (AI) or mentoring the next generation of women in tech.

“The pace of change in AI is exhilarating,” Sherer says, her voice brimming with enthusiasm. “Every day, there’s a new breakthrough, a new possibility. It’s not just about solving problems—it’s about creating opportunities that didn’t exist before.”

A Journey Rooted in Problem-Solving

Sherer’s career began with a fascination for data and its potential to drive decision-making. “I’ve always been drawn to problem-solving,” she reflects. “Early on, I realized that data could be a powerful tool for unlocking insights and shaping strategies.” Her career took a pivotal turn when she joined FICO, the analytics software company best known for its credit scoring models. There, she honed her expertise in decision optimization, applying analytics to make risk-versus-return trade-offs more precise. “FICO was where I learned to blend analytics, software, and services to deliver scalable solutions,” she says. “It was a formative experience that shaped my approach to consulting.” Sherer’s journey continued with stints at RMS, a catastrophe risk modeling firm, and at another global consulting firm, where she launched new businesses in insurance analytics. These roles allowed her to expand her focus, tackling complex challenges like natural disaster preparedness and risk mitigation.

But it was her move to Bain & Company 11 years ago that marked a new chapter in her career. At Bain, Sherer found a platform to combine her expertise in analytics, strategy, and technology. Today, she leads Generative AI business transformations for some of the firm’s largest clients, helping them unlock efficiencies, personalization, and innovation through advanced AI solutions. “I’m fascinated by the “future of work” and the fact that AI will fundamentally change how the “human in the loop will deliver ever-increasing value at a pace never imagined before” says Sherer.

A Commitment to Women in Technology

As a woman in consulting and technology, Sherer’s path hasn’t always been easy. “Early in my career, I was often the only woman in the room,” she recalls. “I battled imposter syndrome while juggling work and raising three children. It was challenging, but it also taught me the importance of resilience and self-belief.”

Sherer credits her success to a combination of hard work, mentorship, and a commitment to staying true to herself. “I learned to focus on delivering results and building strong networks,” she says. She talks about the mentors who have played a pivotal role in shaping her career. One key figure was Eric Almquist, a pioneer in consumer insights who brought her into transformative projects that would later be published in the Harvard Business Review. These early experiences, along with guidance from senior leaders like FICO’s former CEO Larry Rosenberger, helped Sherer build the confidence and skills needed to rise through the ranks. “Eric and Larry taught me not just how to build successful strategies but how to lead with humility, collaboration, and confidence. It’s that balance that’s key to being a successful leader, especially in today’s rapidly changing business environment,” Sherer reflects. “Over time, I turned my challenges into opportunities to mentor other women and help them navigate their careers.”

Sherer passion for supporting women in tech led her to Women in Data Science (WiDS), a global initiative that empowers women to pursue careers in data science and AI. Sherer is deeply involved in the organization, working to elevate and inspire the next generation of female leaders. “WiDS has created a global movement where women can shine, share their ideas, and build connections.” The continued collaboration with WiDS, Stanford University and Bain’s partnership with ICONIQ Capital enables them to host a high-profile conference centered on AI, business transformation, and leadership in celebration of International Women’s Week. For Sherer, this is more than a professional milestone—it’s a personal mission to secure new sponsorships and ensure the longevity of WiDS, an organization that has given thousands of women a platform to thrive in the tech world. “The founder, Margot Gerritsen, has been a beacon of light for so many women in data science—including me. She created a global movement where 150,000+ women have had the opportunity to shine. Now, I feel a responsibility to keep her vision alive,” says Sherer. “WiDS is at a critical moment right now. If we don’t secure new funding, we risk losing the very platform that’s empowered so many women to pursue careers in AI and data science. This is about so much more than just an event—it’s about preserving a space for women to lead and continue advancing in technology.” While the stakes are high, Sherer is unwavering in her belief that the work will pay off. “It’s exhilarating and exhausting, but I’m committed to supporting WiDS,” she says. “The people involved are incredible, and it’s a privilege to be part of something that is shaping the future of women in data science.”

"Every day, there’s a new breakthrough, a new possibility. It’s not just about solving problems—it’s about creating opportunities that didn’t exist before."

A Collaborative, Data-Driven Approach

Sherer’s consulting style is rooted in collaboration, curiosity, and a relentless focus on results. “I believe in deeply understanding a client’s challenges, asking the right questions, and working alongside them to shape impactful solutions,” she explains. Over the years, her approach has evolved to embrace experimentation and iteration. “We live in a world of rapid change, and the best solutions come from testing, learning, and adapting,” she says. “It’s about being agile and responsive to user needs while driving business impact.” One of Sherer’s most rewarding projects at Bain has been leading the strategy and implementation of Generative AI for major clients. “Generative AI is a game-changer,” she says. “It’s not just about automating tasks—it’s about amplifying creativity, productivity, and innovation. Seeing the impact, it has on businesses is incredibly fulfilling.”

Creating Opportunities

As Sherer looks to the future, she sees endless possibilities for AI and technology to drive transformative change. “We’re just scratching the surface of what AI can do,” she says. “The key is to approach it responsibly, ensuring that it serves as an enabler of progress and inclusivity.”

Bain & Company is at the forefront of this transformation, helping companies navigate AI adoption, integrate digital strategies, and build lasting capabilities. “Our goal is to empower organizations to thrive in a rapidly evolving landscape,” Sherer explains. “That means not only delivering impact today but also equipping them for the challenges and opportunities of tomorrow.”

Sherer is equally committed to inspiring women to pursue careers in the consulting and tech industries. “We need more women at the table, shaping the future of AI and technology,” she says. “It’s not just the right thing to do—it’s essential for driving innovation and creating solutions that work for everyone.”

Making a Difference

For Lori Sherer, success is about more than achieving business results—it’s about making a difference. Whether she’s leading AI-driven transformations, mentoring the next generation of women in tech, or championing initiatives like WiDS, Sherer is driven by a desire to create lasting impact.

“What keeps me motivated is the opportunity to innovate, inspire, and empower others,” she says. “Every day, I get to work with brilliant people, tackle complex challenges, and explore new possibilities. It’s a privilege, and I don’t take it for granted.”

As the world of consulting and technology continues to evolve, Lori Sherer remains a guiding light—a leader who bridges strategy and technology, breaks barriers, and builds a brighter future for all.
