Dr. Pauldy Otermans, COO and co-founder of Otermans Institute, an exceptional Ph.D. holder in Cognitive Psychology/Cognitive Neuroscience from Brunel University London, has remarkably harnessed AI to its full potential for her students’ all-encompassing growth. Her expertise lies at the intersection of education, technology, neuroscience, and psychology. She has extensive experience in research and teaching, and her work focuses on developing and delivering effective educational interventions using AI. In addition, she has a strong commitment to leveraging her organization’s resources and experience to strengthen communities and individuals all across the world.

Aspioneer (A): Kindly emphasize more on your motto, “Democratizing Learning Through AI Technology.” Along with that, how can you describe the value proposition of the company?

Pauldy Otermans (P): “In the heart of London (UK), Otermans Institute (OI) is spearheading a revolution in education, leveraging the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to democratize learning worldwide. OI’s mission is to make education more accessible through innovative AI-powered tools, ensuring that no learner and no institution are left behind in the ever-evolving digital landscape. We are leveraging AI to create personalized teachers who are always available. Our motto is ‘Democratising Learning Through AI Technology’ as we aim to upskill an entire generation of learners. Frankly, we are not creating another chatbot or another e-learning platform. We are solving the problem of learning 2.0 by removing the difficulty that learners face when they are forced to choose between interactivity and accessibility. It encompasses knowledge bases, the ability to do small talk, to clear any doubts at any time, and to speak in real-time despite being a synthetic avatar. No such complete solution, or something close, exists in the market today. OI’s value proposition can be summarised as follows:

  • Democratise education through AI: OI empowers learners worldwide to access quality education regardless of their location or socio-economic background.

  • Personalised learning experiences: OI’s AI-powered teachers provide tailored learning journeys for each individual, ensuring that each learner receives the personalized support they need to succeed.

  • Global impact: OI collaborates with governments, NGOs, and UN bodies to expand its reach and impact, ensuring that its educational solutions reach underserved communities worldwide.

Since its inception in 2020, amidst the challenges brought about by the pandemic, OI has upskilled over 40,000 learners across 17 countries, demonstrating its unwavering commitment to bridging the digital divide and empowering learners to reach their full potential, supporting schools and institutions in their teaching curriculum at the same time.

A: Why AI? Do you believe your technology can have any unwanted implications?

P: “The teacher shortage is a global crisis, with countries like the UK, Germany, and Poland facing significant vacancies. Otermans Institute’s AI-powered solutions offer a promising way to address this challenge and provide quality education to all. As the world’s first AI-driven Digital Human Teachers platform, OIAI surpassed expectations, not only replicating the teaching method of human teachers but also creating synthetic avatars that can teach for other organizations. This success has made OIAI my organization’s primary focus for the next 5 years. Additionally, OI developed Teddy AI, an AI-powered learning companion app that provides personalized and engaging learning experiences for children. Teddy AI’s unique feature allows parents to control the app’s content, tailoring the learning experience to their children’s needs. Some possible factors to consider might be: 

  • Over-reliance on technology: If students become too reliant on technology for learning, they may not develop the critical thinking skills that they need to succeed in the 21st century.

  • Social isolation: If students spend too much time learning online, they may become socially isolated.

However, we are committed to developing products that have a positive impact on education. Our team is working to mitigate the potential negative consequences of our technology by:

  • Working with teachers to ensure that our products are used to support and enhance, not replace, the work of teachers.

  • Making our tools affordable and accessible to all.

  • Develop products that help students develop critical thinking skills and communication skills.

  • Promoting social interaction through our tools, creating a strong and supportive community.

We believe that the potential benefits of our educational tools outweigh the potential risks. That’s why we are committed to working with stakeholders to ensure that our tools are used responsibly and ethically. Our goal is not to replace teachers with AI, but rather to empower them with the tools and resources they need to become even more effective educators. By leveraging AI to handle mundane tasks, we can elevate the role of teachers, allowing them to dedicate their time and expertise to the most rewarding aspects of education: nurturing individual growth, igniting a passion for learning, and preparing students for success in a dynamic world. However, having said all of that, where teachers can no longer reach students, like in areas of war and destruction, our teacher will be the teaching system for all learners who need it. Moreover, ESG is at the core of our mission. Currently, our highest priority is to move away from Large Language Models which use extremely heavy computing and electricity in data centers. We are working on developing Small Language Models that can work on CPUs and eventually on local devices to power our AI.”

A: How have you been ‘Managing and Mentoring Talent’ and what future ideas have driven you to make the best of your resources?

P: I took on the responsibility of mentoring and developing junior colleagues, nurturing their professional growth, and empowering them to take on greater responsibilities. This experience taught me the value of fostering a culture of mentorship, continuous learning, and individual empowerment. Fostering an environment of open dialogue and idea exchange within my team is not only a personal philosophy but also a cornerstone of OI’s spirit. By continuously engaging with my team members, not to mention our learners, the very heart of our organization, we gather invaluable insights that shape our approach to education. Every product and every solution we develop is meticulously crafted with their needs, challenges, and aspirations in mind. This collaborative approach cultivates a cross-pollination of ideas, igniting the spark of innovation that drives our success. In addition, we are very research-driven. This includes all aspects of product design and implementation and using validated and reliable scales from the academic literature to test several aspects of our products with our learners. In 2020, we started our training with human teachers and quickly scaled to 11+ countries. We experienced that scaling our teachers and trainers was the biggest bottleneck to serving millions globally. To tackle this, we created the world’s first AI digital human teachers, which provide our main content delivery today. A simple move to remove a bottleneck within the organization led to us developing pioneering technology for the world and being the first to teach entire modules at university purely with AI teachers in 2023.
