Overcoming barriers
Dr. Jamali’s career has been marked by a relentless pursuit of excellence and a refusal to accept limitations. As a woman navigating the traditionally male-dominated realm of academia and leadership, she often faced gender biases that questioned her potential. Yet, rather than retreating from these obstacles, Dr. Jamali turned them into a source of motivation. “When I first encountered these biases, I was frustrated, but I also felt a sense of determination,” she recalls. “I focused on proving that my abilities and passion were not defined by gender.” By delivering excellence in her work and advocating for diversity and inclusion, Dr. Jamali defied the stereotypes imposed upon her, proving time and again that leadership transcends gender. This resilience not only helped her rise in the ranks but also shaped her approach to mentoring others. “I believe in leading by example,” she says. “Empowering others—especially women and underrepresented groups—is central to my leadership style. I encourage those I mentor to trust their abilities, challenge the status quo, and believe in their potential.”
One of the most defining moments in her career occurred early on when she pitched an ambitious initiative only to be met with skepticism and dismissive remarks from senior colleagues. Yet, her confidence, backed by data and strategy, turned the tide. By the end of the meeting, her vision was embraced and the initiative became one of her most successful projects. “I learned that no one should define your limits. When you’re passionate and prepared, your voice and your ideas can break through any barrier,” Dr. Jamali reflects. This lesson has been pivotal in her work, both as a leader and as a mentor.
